Work From Home Nomads

Here’s what makes me a ‘work from home nomad’.

  • Online training in my son’s room, pm times
  • Podcast in my daughter’s room, pm times
  • Conf calls and online coaching sessions at my living room desk, am times; for pm times, bedroom corner is the other option
  • Content creation at the living room table, anytime, headphones on
  • Videos in the special bedroom corner, light is perfect there 🙂

Don’t stress about a fixed place to work from. Choose your ‘workspace’ depending on what you have to do and what the best ‘home desk’ is.

Manage Your Virtual Team, Tips from Leaders

  1. Use the morning ‘commute’ time to start the day off right whether that’s taking a little longer to enjoy the first cup of coffee, meditating, working out or having breakfast with the family
  2. Make every call a video call
  3. Catch up with everyone during the first few mins of the call just like you would in a meeting room
  4. Focus on getting things done by using collaboration tools such as google docs, sheets, slides etc.
  5. Communicate with the team continuously by leveraging chat tools, such as slack, to share information, address questions, work out solutions etc.

Engage Your Team in Online Presentations

DO

  • Change slides every 20-25 seconds
  • Less text on slides, more animation and colours
  • Change tone of voice more often
  • Involve participants during your presentation
  • Use body language! Even if people don’t see you, it ‘shows’ in your voice and it gives YOU more energy

DON’T

  • Keep one slide on for over 30
  • Use the same presentation that you had for offline
  • Use a monotone voice
  • Keep all Q&A just for the end of your presentation
  • Get low on energy levels
  • Slouch or crash on your couch to present

Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo

  1. Decide on a clear task that you want to focus on that will take you at least 25 minutes to do.
  2. Start a timer for 25 minutes and start working on the task. This time block is known as a Pomodoro.
    • You can never do half a Pomodoro.
    • Do not work on anything else.
    • If you get distracted, gently bring yourself back to work or reset to zero.
  3. Take 5 once the timer ends! Get up, stretch, get some more water, do a happy dance. Start another Pomodoro right after the break, or schedule the next one.
