Workout Your Skills!

Think about these 7 skills muscles as if they were body muscles. The ones that help you move, run, go places, see people, create your life as you imagine it. Think about these skills as ‘the’ skills that help you most in your interactions with both the inner and outer world.

7 Skills Workouts

The more aware we become, the less we think we know. But then, the more we want to discover. So the more we learn and the stronger we build our skills muscles.

#1 TRUST

Build TRUST! At the foundation of all great relationships, we find trust. It is us, with everything we bring to the table, who build it. And we don’t just build trust with others, but with ourselves first. 

We build trust when we use our whole self, over and over again, to grow the relationships we value. And this is personal.

#2 SPEAK

Speak Up! I don’t believe in the paralyzing fear of presenting and public speaking! Great presenters and speakers weren’t born great. They practised. A lot! Think about the skills you master: were you born riding a bike, or did you learn it by practising, over and over again? Driving? Creating Excel charts?

Just like any other skill, the more we ‘speak’, the easier it gets, and the less anxious we feel.

#3 SELF-MANAGE

Discover Your Self! How often do we hear the terms ‘stress management’ or ‘time management’? When we decide to manage them, we don’t really manage either stress, nor time. We manage ourselves! Our personal experiences shape how we manage ourselves and others.

Once we’re able to build a solid relationship with our Self, we build strong relationships with others, too.

#4 PRESENT

Show Up! Presentations are something we do on a regular basis – when we introduce ourselves, when we speak at meetings, when we network, when we go to job interviews. The more aware we are that, in fact, we find ourselves in ‘presentation mode’ quite regularly, the easier it gets.

It’s all about the practice! Because skills are just like muscles: the more we train them, the more they show up and serve when needed.

#5 LEAD

Lead Ahead! Leadership: one big word, such a complex concept! One way or another, we’re all leaders, in our own lives and ways. 
True leadership is not about hierarchy, but about legacy. What do we want to build and how do we need to build it so it lasts? And, perhaps most importantly, who will be there with us on this journey? And what can we do to keep the belief and the team strong, even during thunderstorms?

That takes experience, absolutely! And it’s also a skill we can all learn.

#6 FEEDBACK

Feed Your Relationships! Feedback is healthy food for healthy relationships! Giving feedback, especially negative, means courage. 
It’s the courage to be honest, to tell you my truth and how things look from where I stand, while feeling uncomfortable and expecting you will disagree with me.

This courage brings in accountability. And accountability fosters trust, which is key for all good relationships.

#7 BREATHE

Breathe For Impact! We learn a lot about many things, but no one really teaches us how to breathe properly. I mean, breathe not just to survive, but to maximize the way we speak, our presence and our ability to manage stressful situations.
